Dance, Dance, Dance

From August 10-15, the circular courtyard of Copenhagen’s Police Headquarters building becomes the backdrop for Copenhagen Summer Dance, a glorious outdoor dance festival featuring three outstanding Scandinavian dance companies: the New Danish Dance Theatre, Norwegian National Ballet and Sweden’s Gothenborg Opera Ballet. Six ballets are on the program, including three choreographed by Tim Rushton, artistic director of the New Danish Dance Theatre.

From September 14-19, Tivoli Gardens welcomes the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater for seven thrilling performances. The program includes classics such as “Cry” and “Revelations” as well as recent favorites, “Juba” and “Heart Song.”

Lovers of avant-garde and modern dance must visit Gran Theater for Dance in Aarhus. The resident company is the always-innovative Granhøj Dans, brainchild of artistic director/choreographer Palle Granhøj. This season’s visiting companies include the New Danish Dance Theatre, Norway’s Jo Strømgren Company and the Contemporary Legend Theatre of Taiwan, which performs “King Lear” in September.
