Britain will be celebrating the achievements of several of its literary ‘greats’ in 2005. From Charlotte Brontë to William Wordsworth, some of the nation’s renowned men and women of letters will be remembered in the areas they loved.
- In Yorkshire, the 150th anniversary of Charlotte Brontë’s death will be marked at the Brontë Parsonage Museum in Haworth. An exhibition including letters, costume and manuscripts opens on February 1 and runs until December 31. There will also be a contemporary art event for the anniversary, "Leaving Home" (March 11-31) with film projected on the outside of the building and projections in the historic rooms of the house. A Royal Mail stamp will commemorate Charlotte’s death and a memorial service takes place in Haworth Church (Mar. 31).
- It is 250 years since Samuel Johnson compiled his remarkable Dictionary in 1755: his house can be visited just off London’s Fleet Street and the lexicographer’s Birthplace Museum is in Lichfield, Staffordshire: the great man’s study is being given a makeover and local walking tours arranged.
- Sir Winston Churchill was a writer and artist as well as a statesman and the 40th anniversary of his death will be marked with an exhibition at his ancestral home, Blenheim Palace, from May to September. www.blenheimpalace.com
- In the Lake District it is 100 years since author and artist Beatrix Potter purchased her farmhouse Hill Top, near Windermere, now a National Trust property open to the public. Miss Tiggywinkle, one of her popular animal characters, will be 100 years old. It is the 200th anniversary of William Wordsworth’s autobiographical poem, The Prelude; and the 75th of Arthur Ransome’s story Swallows and Amazons, set on Coniston Water and Lake Windermere.
