Heat up your mid-winter blahs at the Fourth Annual Food and Fun Festival in Reykjavik. This week-long festival of special promotions at restaurants and bars brings to light achievements of chefs and brew masters, as well as manufacturers of Icelandic gourmet products such as caviar, shrimp, lamb and cheese.
The core element of the festival involves 12 world acclaimed chefs who collaborate with 12 of Reykjavik's best restaurants. Each chef is assigned to one of the 12 participating restaurants, where they prepare a special menu, made out of Icelandic ingredients only. The menu is presented at all 12 restaurants for an entire week. In addition, the chefs themselves are on site for three nights during the festival week.
The second element of the festival is the chef competition, which takes place on the last day of the the festival. The chefs compete by making three courses, made out of Icelandic ingredients only. The competition is unique because the chefs all possess exceptional culinary skills, but have not worked with Icelandic ingredients before. Prior to the competition, they are given 30 minutes to quickly shop at the nearby supermarket with only one order: Icelandic ingredients only! Then they are given three hours to apply their magic.
The third element is the Grand Gala! The Gala invites participants of the festival, including chefs, tourists, locals and restaurant owners to meet and enjoy world class food, dance and fun.
