London's 2012 bid organisers have released plans for the next generation of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The city is one of the five candidates to hold the 2012 games: the decision as to which city will do so will be announced by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in July.
The blueprint for the London Olympic Games is based on extensive use of existing venues, rapid transport connections and state-of-the-art sporting facilities, linked to sustainable community benefits. An Olympic Park around Stratford in the east of London will include the most spacious Athletes' Village in the history of the Games and will be surrounded by key venues including the main athletics stadium, aquatics centre, velodrome, hockey centre and multi-sport indoor arenas for basketball, volleyball, fencing and other sports. It will also contain the main press and broadcasting centres.
Wembley Stadium, where reconstruction will be complete in 2006; Wimbledon; Hyde Park (for the triathlon) and Lord’s cricket ground (for archery) are among the capital’s existing world-class venues that will also be used. There will be a World Cultural Fair and Olympic carnival running alongside the Games and an Olympic marathon would take in many landmarks including Westminster Abbey, Buckingham Palace and the Houses of Parliament. "We will celebrate the world’s biggest and most important sporting and cultural festival in world famous places," said London 2012 chairman and dual Olympic gold medallist, Sebastian Coe.
The IOC Evaluation Commission will make an inspection visit to London in February and will prepare a detailed report on the potential of each candidate city in May. IOC President Jacques Rogge announces the result of the vote by IOC members of the city to host the 2012 Summer Olympics in Singapore on July 6.
